Meditation, thought, and mindfulness brings about your ideal lifestyle. The tidying process is not about making your home look neat or clean, but about sparking joy in your life.
Before you begin tidying, envision your best life — this is a turning point.
Marie Kondo is one of today’s leading inspirators of joyful living. She’s helped people find joy, fulfillment, thankfulness, and tidiness with her six rules of tidying with the KonMari method.
Here’s the second rule:
Imagine your ideal lifestyle
In her own words, Marie Kondo explains how to imagine your ideal lifestyle:
“Before you begin tidying, take a moment to imagine the life you want to lead. The question of what you want to own is actually the question of how you want to live your life. Be specific as possible. What does the beginning and the end of your day look like? Picture yourself living your ideal life. Having a clear image as you tidy will help you stay motivated — and you’ll begin to create the life you’ve always longed for.”
Here are a few ways to imagine your ideal lifestyle:
- Write. Describe it in a journal with words — living words are the ones that bring a change.
- Draw. Sketch an image of it on paper. What’s tidy?
- Search. Look for your ideal lifestyle in magazines, images, or online. Print or cut out your favorites.
- Listen. Let the silence — or mellow humming of your atmosphere — bring you peace and centeredness. What sounds do you want to hear?
As you search for your ideal lifestyle, consider a few of these questions:
- What is your ideal moment that would spark joy?
- What is something delightful you could do?
- What is currently working for you in your space and in your life?
- What is currently NOT working for you in your space and in your life?
- How would you live your life is money, time and obligations were not a constraint?
Take a holistic look, not just at your home, but in all areas of your life.

Consider her other Rules:
Rule 1 Of The KonMari Method: Commit Yourself To Tidying Up
Rule 3 Of The KonMari Method: Finish Discarding First
Rule 4 Of The KonMari Method: Tidy By Category, Not By Location
Rule 5 Of The KonMari Method: Follow The Right Order
Rule 6 Of The KonMari Method: Ask Yourself If It Sparks Joy
The KonMari method
“Most tidying methods advocate a room-by-room or little-by-little approach, which doom you to pick away at your piles of stuff forever.
The KonMari Method™ encourages tidying by category – not by location – beginning with clothes, then moving on to books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items), and, finally, sentimental items. Keep only those things that speak to the heart, and discard items that no longer spark joy. Thank them for their service – then let them go.
People around the world have been drawn to this philosophy not only due to its effectiveness, but also because it places great importance on being mindful, introspective and forward-looking.”
